Celebrating the Fifth Anniversary of Nessun Dogma Magazine

If there’s a newspaper in Italy where you can read articles that offer a glimpse into a world far removed from religious conformity, it’s Nessun Dogma (“No Dogmas”), the publishing project of the Union of Rationalist Atheists and Agnostics. Every two months, Nessun Dogma – Secular Acting for a More Humane World promotes rights and secular-humanist thought, addressing non-believers and beyond.

In Rome, at the Casa Internazionale delle Donne (International Women’s House) at Via della Lungara 19, UAAR is celebrating five years of publication with two days of meetings on topics dear to its members, on Friday, June 6 and Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. The opening press conference, which will present the publishing project, is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Friday. This will be followed by the presentation of the latest publication, titled Skeptics of Islam, a selection of writings by secular Arab intellectuals from the 19th and 20th centuries, edited by Ralph M. Coury. Nessun dogma – Libri per menti libere (“No Dogmas – Books for Free Minds”) boasts a rich catalog, edited by UAAR. Subsequent meetings will discuss living wills, debaptism, the right to abortion, secular ceremonies, freedom of expression, and blasphemy. The final debate, starting at 5 pm on Saturday, will feature a multi-voice discussion on freedom of expression and blasphemy with director Raffaele Carcano, journalist Federico Tulli, and researcher and professor Silvia Baldassarre from the University of Florence. It will be followed by a screening of Nomina contra deum, the first documentary on blasphemy, directed by Luca De Gaspari.

The bimonthly magazine has released six issues each year, for a total of 33 since 2020. “Every two months,” explains editorial director Raffaele Carcano, “we tell you about the commitment of men and women, young and old, from UAAR and beyond. Sixty pages per issue dedicated to those who want to change the world: more secular, more humane, more sensible.

With interviews, columns, and reviews, Nessun Dogma has so far addressed topics related to ethics, philosophy, politics, and science, often with an ironic twist, but always with a serious focus and from an unconventional perspective. The cover of the first issue, in January 2020, was dedicated to DJ Fabo, with insights into the end of life and the Constitutional Court ruling that made it possible to request physician-assisted suicide in 2019. Several recurring issues were addressed: apostasy, the secular nature of the state, the right to decide on one’s own body, the teaching of the Catholic religion, the rivers of public money allocated to the Church, and the one most disliked by non-believers: the Concordat between the State and the Catholic Church, which the UAAR has been calling for abolition or at least a revision of for many years.
